Element Six was awarded a patent by the World Intellectual Property Organization for a method for making fancy pale blue or fancy pale blue/green, single crystal, CVD, diamond.

"Starting from a diamond material which shows a difference in its absorption characteristics after exposure to radiation with an energy of at least 5.5 eV (typically UV radiation) and thermal treatment at 798K, controlled irradiation is applied so as to introduce defects in the diamond material.

"After the controlled irradiation the difference in the absorption characteristics after exposure to radiation with an energy of at least 5.5 eV and thermal treatment at 798K is reduced. Diamond material with absorption features characteristic of isolated vacancies is also described."

The patent was filed on June 25, 2010 under Application No. PCT/EP2010/059080 and awarded December 31. The Element Six inventors were Harpreet Kaur Dhillon, Sarah Louise Geoghegan, and Daniel James Twitchen of the U.K. Element Six is a division of De Beers.
