Prince William Gives Kate Middleton His Late Mother’s Engagement Ring

It seems that it has become celebrity engagement season on both sides of the pond as Prince William, 28, finally made it official today that he intends to marry fiancé Kate Middleton, and that news overshadowed Jessica Simpson’s engagement announcement this past weekend.
It appears though -- unlike his father who proposed before chosing a ring -- William popped the question with a ring as Middleton was spotted wearing the sparkler over the weekend. But while the blogosphere was flooded with speculation, actual details of the new royal ring have not yet been revealed. Following Lady Diana’s engagement back in 1981, she chose an oval blue sapphire engagement ring that weighed 18 carats and was surrounded by 14 small diamonds in an elegant cluster setting.
The British media played up the news, making Hollywood’s latest engagements pale by comparison. Details of Simpson’s ring from Neil Lane emerged after she announced an engagement with former U.S. football player Eric Johnson. Simpson showed off her sparkly engagement ring at Dillard's department store in Kansas City.
Simpson's ring was designed with Lane's iconic style and featured a 5-carat ruby center stone, which was said to be the singer’s birth stone, and offset by diamonds on both sides.
Simpson and Johnson, who recently divorced his first wife, have been dating for five months. Simpson's ex-husband of five years, Nick Lachey announced his engagement to his girlfriend of four years, Vanessa Minnillo, this past week, which has led many to speculate on the timing of Simpson's announcement. But, be that as it may, the singer seems quite happy with her ruby red engagement ring.
