Steinmetz unveiled the largest pair of matching round brilliant cut D color, flawless diamonds at Bloomberg Link’s Hedge Funds 2010 event held at the Guggenheim Museum in New York this past week.
These rare stones, named the Steinmetz Yin Yang, weigh 35.61 and 35.77 carats respectively and were cut from two individual rough diamonds, each initially weighing more than 100 carats. The diamonds were discovered in southern Africa and cut by Steinmetz. The resulting gems are flawless both internally and externally of the highest D color and are also type IIa, a classification reserved for less than 2 percent of world diamonds.
The company decided to name the stones Yin Yang as they exemplify the natural metaphor of Yin Yang, as two complementary entities that interact to form a greater whole.
“More than a year was spent by a team of Steinmetz craftsmen to finish the perfectly matched pair of round brilliant cut stones,” said Nir Livnat, chairman of Steinmetz Diamonds.
Livnat led the team of specialist artisans who designed and cut the stones. “We had some major challenges to overcome along the way both in design and manufacturing,” he noted. “I’m happy to say that we have reached our goal creating the world’s largest pair of round brilliant diamonds graded D and both internally and externally flawless, with excellent cut, symmetry and polish.”
According to market specialists, the Steinmetz Yin Yang are valued in excess of $25 million and will be sold through Sotheby’s Diamonds, the partnership between esteemed auction house Sotheby’s and Steinmetz Diamonds.
Steinmetz also showcased a pair of 5-carat fancy intense blue diamonds; a 43-carat vivid yellow cushion cut; a 27-carat emerald cut stone; an extremely rare 20 carat fancy purplish pink; and a 75 carat radiant intense yellow diamond.
