Christie’s London jewelry sale realized about $19.5 million (GBP 12,591,813) and included the property of the "Portland Collection,” which alone fetched $13.4 million. The sale was 75 percent sold by lot.

Christie’s auction houseThe top lot of the London sale was a 9.20-ct. Burmese ruby ring, which sold for $3.3 million, or $571,582 per carat. Other highlights of the auction, those pieces that were sold for more than $1 million, included an antique diamond festoon necklace, which realized $2.8 million; a natural pearl brooch, that sold for $2.4 million; an antique diamond revière, which sold for $1.5 million and a sapphire, diamond and natural pearl tiara, which was bought for $1.2 million.

Keith Penton, head of jewels at Christie’s London said that the Portland Collection exemplified an extremely rare group of ancestral jewels offered directly to the market for the first time. The collection also sparked fierce competition and these lots tripled their presale estimate, selling 100 percent.

Penton explained that international clients from 26 countries competed throughout the auction, in the room, on Christie’s Live and with more than 100 telephone bidders.
