The Hong Kong Sale earned US$78.9 million, the highest total ever for a jewelry auction in Asia and the largest ever at Christie’s worldwide. The auction's top sale was the Perfect Pink, a rare 14.23-carat Fancy Intense Pink rectangular-cut diamond, which sold for US$23.2 million, making it the most expensive jewel ever sold in Asia. The type IIa, VVS2 diamond sold to an anonymous buyer.

14.23 carat Fancy Intense Pink rectangular-cut diamondAnother highlight of the November 29th auction, which sold 88 percent of the 302 lots offered, included a Golcanda pear-shaped 12.29-carat diamond suspended from a colorless and pink diamond necklace by Nirav Modi, which sold to a private Asian buyer.

A marquise-cut 16.72-carat Internally Flawless D-color diamond also earned US$3,114,384 or US$186,266 per carat to another private Asian buyer.

In addition to diamonds, high demand for rubies and sapphires was also displayed at the auction. An oval-cut 7.04-carat Burmese ruby ring brought in US$2,970,128, or US$421,893 per carat, and a pair of cushion-cut ear pendants, containing a 5.02-carat Burmese ruby and a 4.24-carat diamond by Etcetera earned US$2,595,062, or US$280,000 per carat. A pair of cushion-cut Kashmir sapphire ear pendants containing 8.74 carats and 8.65 carats fetched US$2,032,464, or US$115,000 per carat while a pair of cushion-cut "Royal Blue" Burmese sapphire ear pendants of 17.25 carats and 15.09 carats sold for US$1,383,312, or US$42,700 per carat.

"At US$23.2m, the Perfect Pink became the most expensive jewel ever sold at auction in Asia. Exceptional Burmese rubies and Kashmir sapphire also fetched top prices, as did jadeite which remains in great demand with Asian collectors," says Vickie Sek, Director of the Jewellery and Jadeite Department, Christie’s Asia.

In other company news, Christie's will be offering more than 210 individual items in its upcoming New York Jewels sale on December 7. The sale features a variety of colored and colorless diamonds, precious gemstones, and signed jewels of all cuts and sizes. Estimates range from $600 up to $6 million, and the total sale is expected to achieve in excess of $20 million.

Prices for exceedingly rare blue and pink diamonds have reached record-breaking prices at auction, as displayed by the sale of the aforementioned Perfect Pink diamond for US$23.2 million and by The BVLGARI Blue diamond for US $15.7 million or $1.4 million per carat, which set a new world auction record per-carat price for a blue diamond.

"As a fitting coda to this truly amazing year for colored diamonds at auction, Christie's is pleased to present a superb Fancy Vivid purple-pink diamond of 6.89 carats which is mounted as a ring with a pavé-set pink diamond surround." According to the auction house, it is expected to realize in excess of $6 million.
