Gemstone weight is usually measured in carats. When comparing jewelry items that contain the same type of gemstone, carat is a good indicator of gemstone size (e.g., a 2-carat diamond will be twice the size of a 1-carat diamond).

But remember that carat may not be as useful when comparing different gemstones with different densities.

For instance, a 1-carat sapphire or ruby would be smaller than a 1-carat emerald, because sapphires and rubies (both are forms of the mineral corundum) are denser than emeralds.
