Debswana Set to Build Tailings Treatment Plant at Jwaneng Mine
It’s also looking for new partner...Debswana’s board is considering installing a tailing treatment plant at its Jwaneng mine in Botswana.
Executives at the company are scheduled to approve the project that would enable access to 39 million tonnes of ore and is expected to produce 800,000 carats per year during a 20 year period, Mmegi reported.
Press reports indicated that the company is conducting feasibility studies for the tailings and that Debswana hopes to begin recovery from the tailings by the end of 2013. The tailings dump was originally meant to be built in 2008, but the company put it on hold due to the global economic crisis.
Debswana set aside its plans to revive the project in 2010 in partnership with Firestone Diamonds, but decided rather to focus on its existing operations.
Debswana is looking for a new partner for the project, the press reports indicated.
The Jwaneng mine is the world’s largest mine by production value and contributes 60 to 70 percent of Debswana’s total revenue.
