GIA to Provide Diamond Training for 20 Students in Bangui
It is called PRADD project...The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has approved a grant to support a United States Agency for International Development (USAID) project called Property Rights and Artisanal Diamond Development (PRADD).
The grant will provide training for five participants from Liberia and 15 participants from the Central African Republic already involved with the PRADD project in sorting and evaluation of diamonds.
GIA will fund all travel and accommodation costs for the 20 students to participate in a week-long training course to be held in Bangui, Central African Republic. GIA will also waive the full tuition fee and provide specialized training materials, including rough diamonds as well as an instructor, assistant instructor and translator for the duration of the course.
“We look forward to serving this region through our educational offerings,” said GIA's president, Donna Baker. “We are honored to work alongside USAID on this important initiative to help achieve a greater quality of life for the residents of these African communities.”
The PRADD project supports the efforts of governments to implement the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS). The project aims to bring greater quantities of alluvial diamonds into the legal diamond pipeline while at the same time improving the livelihood of local mining communities.
