BHP Billiton is set to auction off 78 carat EKATI Spirit diamond in Antwerp, Belgium, on Valentine’s Day, the company announced today (February 10).

BHP Billiton 78 cts loose diamond from EKATI Diamond MineThe loose diamond, which was discovered at BHP Billiton EKATI Diamond Mine in Canada, is the most significant gem quality diamond.

The auction will use a hybrid system for the first time, combining the features of the two auction platforms used by BHP Billiton in the past.

A Uniform Price Auction for stones up to 7 carats in size, and an Ascending Clock Auction for larger and special stones.
