Birks & Mayors Sales Rise 8 percent During Holiday SeasonTo $75.5 million...

Birks & Mayors retail sales net during the Christmas season, measured from October 31 through December 25, last year, rose by 8 percent to $75.5 million, the company reported.

Same-store sales overall rose 4 percent, with a 7 percent increase in comparable store sales for Canada while the figure rose 2 percent for U.S. operations.

The $5.6 million increase in net sales was driven by an increase in comparable store sales, but $1.9 million was related to stronger currency in Canada. Sales from new stores accounted for $1.1 million in Christmas season revenue.

Stronger sales in Canada reflected an increase in sales transactions primarily related to an increase in store traffic while the increase in the U.S. reflected a higher average sales transaction, according to Thomas A. Andruskevich, president of Birks & Mayors.
