
Australia’s Diamond Production Grows 6% in Three Months

Diamond production in Australia for three months ending September 2010 rose 6 percent to 2.471 million carats, according to government figures. Australia counts the July through September period as its first quarter of fiscal year 2011. Rough diamond exports rose to 2.65 million from only 675,000 during the same quarter of 2009.By value, diamond exports rose 58 percent to $91 million (AUD 93 million) and exports of gemstones other than diamonds rose 22 percent to $10.8 million (AUD 11 million). Imports of diamonds fell 4 percent to $104 million (AUD 106 million).
